This is my first letterbox and I placed it in one of my favorite places to hike. Indian Brook Reservoir is open to the public, but between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you need a park pass to enter. If you are somewhat local, you can find out how to get a park pass by going to this website: www.essex.org. All other times of the year access to the area is open to anyone.

To get to Indian Brook, follow VT Rte 15 into Essex. If you are coming from the south, you will go left on to Old Stage Road just past the Essex outlets. If you are coming from the north, you will go right on Old Stage Road, just past the light at Essex Way. Follow Old Stage for about a 1/2 mile and you will see Indian Brook Road on the left, across the street from the HUGE Essex Alliance Church. Proceed down the road until you get to the gate of the park (about 1.5 to 2 miles). If it is summer, you'll have to show your pass to get in.

Once through the gate, take your first left and then the next immediate left to get into the lower parking lot. Park your car.

Head up the trail from the parking lot. To get to the box, you will be walking the main trail that goes around the pond for about fifteen minutes. It starts out as a steep hill with the dam on the right. Go through the post and boulder and you are on the main trail. At the first fork, stay to the Left, keeping on the main trail. You'll see another short trail on the left, stay straight. Keep going on the main trail. After a few more minutes of walking, the trail heads downhill and then levels off. You'll eventually go over two little causeways that have logs laid across the trail to walk over. Head down until you walk over a third causeway that is framed with 4x4 pieces of wood. Once you get to the last piece of 4x4 frame, count about 55 paces up the main trail. Off the path to your left, you should see a tree with a large boulder next to it--it is about 12 paces into the woods from the trail. You'll find the Indian Brook letterbox behind that boulder under a pile of branches and leaves. It is harder to see this tree with summer foliage. If you get to a split in the trail that has a wooden blue arrow on a tree, you've gone too far.

After you stamp the log book and replace the letterbox, you may want to continue on your hike. The trail is a loop around the pond and it takes about 45 minutes to complete. There are nice swimming areas near the end of the trail. Indian Brook is dog friendly--once you are out of the parking area you can let your dogs walk off leash as long as they are under voice control. Enjoy this gem of a place.
