Grandpa passed away on April 20, 2008, at the age of 84 so we decided to do this letterbox as one of our memorials to him.

Grandpa loved nature and loved hiking, or sometimes driving, to see some nice views. He lived for a good part of his life in the Washington, D.C., area, although his last years were in Texas. Since we moved to the D.C. area from Texas almost five years ago, we decided to find a spot with a good view that Grandpa would have liked.

So start at the Meadowside Nature Center, 5100 Meadowside Lane, in Rockville. Park in the main parking lot by the nature center building. Walk down the trail that starts at the sign at the end of the parking lot. That is the Rocky Ridge Trail; don't take the connecting trail to the Muncaster Mill Trail.

Continue on the Rocky Ridge Trail and take a right at the Backbone Trail. Stop to sit on a bench overlooking a valley with a stream at the bottom of it. Grandpa liked these type of views and would have enjoyed sitting on this bench.

As you look down the small valley while sitting on the bench, you should see a thick, 3-foot-high tree stump about 20 paces in front of the bench. Walk to the tree stump. Walk two or three paces farther down the hill and you should see a long tree trunk lying on the ground. Uncover some bark and sticks and look inside the trunk to find
Grandpa's stamp.

Grandpa was a Government Expert for much of his life, working for the FBI and IRS. His stamp will document your notebook.

NOTE: There is not an ink pad here so you might have to bring your own.
