Difficulty: Easy
Location: A 1 mile hike from parking.
Elevation: Flat, but not completely smooth.
Materials: Bring your own stamp pad, log book, stamp.
Challenge: Spotting the right surface location from the marker.

This box is hidden in a remote area near the village of Cairo, WV.

There are multiple starting points from along the Great Bend Trail bikepath, anywhere from Parkersburg to Clarksburg. However, your goal is at the 27 mile marker on the path, so do the following:

DIRECTIONS:
Start at the intersection of US 50 and South Route 31. Proceed south 4 miles on WV Rte 31 and enter Cairo. Watch for a roadway forming the city square to the left. Take this entry .1 miles to the end and park at the trailhead. Park off to the side of the road, but do not block the paved pathway. This rail line is no longer in use.

Nearby is the commercial bike rental location, Mountain Bicycle Rentals. They may or may not be in the rental business when you arrive. Call ahead or consider bringing your own. Most of the stores around the square will have some literature or a trail map.

On foot, you will start at the east end of the parking lot, where the trail disappears into the bush. The railroad mile marker for the town square is 26, and can be found just to the West over the rusted iron rail bridge, (if you need confirmation or want to see what one looks like. It's a dark brown 4"x4" pillar about 3 feet high with a carved number, painted yellow or orange, with the number of milage from Parkersburg. )

Instead, pick up the bikepath at the point where it crosses Cairo Road and head to the east. When you reach mile marker 27, you have just passed the North Huges River bridge tressel (there are several and an abandoned tunnel #10, a ways back. )

Standing with your back against the mile marker post 27,
Examine the area on the other side of the path, across from the marker. You'll spot two larger trunk trees that fallen. Where they impact the bank or edge of the raised roadway, due north of you, is where you will find the object of your quest. Please replace the camo jar, hiding it from sight.

Bring a stamp pad and your logbook, and your own stamp to this location. Watch for traffic on the bikepath from both directions. Please reseal the baggies and return all contents back into the letter box, closing it for the next person.

And drop us a line if you have other ideas for the bikepath. Enjoy!
