Pine Grove Furnace State Park is located off PA Route 233, 20 miles from Caledonia.

Enter the park near the furnace and drive on back, following the paved road around to the Brickyard Area. Park at the Brickyard Pavilion on the right. The trail you seek, which isn't difficult but can be a bit wet, is in the Southwest corner of the field.

Entering this trail in summer when the ferns are dominant is a cool experience. Even the air seems to take on a greenish hue. You almost expect to run across mythical creatures.

Follow the path for a short while and you come to a shallow ravine. Down, up and stop, your heels at the root that acts as a step on the edge of the side you came up. Lead off with the left and counting lefts only, mark off Seven.
Right Face. Even when the ferns are up you should see the fallen giant, his body broken in pieces and covered with a mossy blanket. We want the section in front of you. With a little closer inspection you should see one of his round eyes.

(NOTE: THE GIANT IS BROKEN BADLY AS OF 4/09. Just go to the first tree marked with a red blaze after the ravine and look behind the section of giant to your right.)

With respect for the dead, reach down along his tapered neck (your left as you face him). The box is snuggled between his bulk and the earth, and best reached from behind. (This box has no ink pad, and needs a good press in the center of its lid to reseal.)

After stamping, travel on to where the trail exits in another section of the park or return the way you came. Oh yeah. . . Fern lore says that fern spores gathered on St. John's Eve can promote invisibility. So just in case, you should make sure you're visible before driving home! Enjoy!
