The Legend of the Dogwood

In Jesus' time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.
'Twas strong & firm it's branches interwoven
For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen.
Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
"Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so
Slender & twisted, it shall be
With blossoms like the cross for all to see.
As blood stains the petals marked in brown
The blossom's center wears a thorny crown.
All who see it will remember me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.
Cherished and protected this tree shall be
A reminder to all of my agony."

This box is alive and well as of 3/19/2009.

To find this letterbox, you must come to the home of the Dogwood Festival, Palestine, Texas. The box is located in Davey Dogwood Park, just north of Palestine off North Link Street. From Loop 256 in Palestine head north on N. Link Street. Turn left into the park at the sign for Davey Dogwood Park. You will need to turn right at the first opportunity. You will stay right at the next junction. Then, bear right at the next junction on road #2. Keep going to you get to the Davey Monument. Hint: The best time to visit is during mid to late March and early April when the Dogwoods are blossoming.

To the box: From the backside of the Davey Monument look to the cement picnic table on your right. Go to the picnic table and stand with your back to it and facing north. You will note a tree with three trunks. Go to this tree. Take 15 steps from this tree to a large hickory tree which is leaning to the east at 60 degrees. The box is at the north side of the base of this tree covered with leaves and branches.

Please re-hide carefully and as good as or better than you found it, and as always watch out for poison ivy, snakes and other critters.

Good hunting!
