The wild turkey feather is the logo of the Master Wildlife Conservationist Program. The MWCP is an adult education program administered by the Connecticut DEP Wildlife Division. Those accepted to the program go through an intensive training and educational program and, upon successful completion, can go on to do volunteer work that may include outreach presentations to schools, nature centers, fairs and festivals, wildlife surveys, assisting with research, etc. If you are interested in the MWCP please call 860-675-8130.

The Turkey Feather letterbox is located at Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area in Burlington. It can be found on Route 69 and can be reached from Route 6 in Bristol or Route 4 in Burlington. Start at the gazebo southeast of the Education Center. Continue west until you pass the Education Center building. To the right of the gate you will see a butterfly garden. Just ahead will be the beginning and ending of the Forest Meadow Trail. Taking the lefthand fork you will be traveling on the trail in a clockwise direction. Sessions Woods, being a State Wildlife Management Area, has many demonstration sites for wildlife management practices so read the signs along the way.

When you reach the “Wildlife and Chestnut Tree” sign (See I told you it was important to read the signs!) look up. You will see a glacial erratic (BIG ROCK). Go behind the erratic. With your back to it and standing next to two black birches sight 120 degrees and proceed 45 paces on that heading. You should then be looking at outcroppings of rocks. The Turkey Feather letterbox will be at the base of the pointed granite boulder.

After stamping return to the trail and continue to the end.

If you are there on a weekday be sure to stop in the Education Center and visit the Exhibit Area. Pick up a trail map and a complimentary copy of the latest issue of Connecticut Wildlife Magazine.

If this is your first visit to Sessions Woods, please come back again and check out the other trails and many other letterboxes planted on the 700 plus acre facility.
