Copp Park, Route 184
Groton, CT

Please be aware of steep terrain when bringing small children or pets. Not advisable during winter. The story is written by Lucille Colandro.

There was an old lady who swallowed a shell.

From the parking lot, head out on the wide yellow trail (you may get the urge to bark) until you come to the yellow arrow. Yellow continues straight, but “take” the yellow on your right, but don’t steal it! Care for a splash in the vernal pool to your left? Soon you’ll stub your toes on a stone wall on the left of the trail. Trip along the wall for 12 paces and pinch your fingers while looking behind the “shell”.

I don’t know why she swallowed the shell.
She didn’t tell.

There was an old lady who swallowed a crab.

Stay on yellow and tromp through a muddy area. Just before the trail turns “sharply” to the left (don’t cut yourself) look right for a big old stump where the crab crawled into a fallen log next door. Watch out for grabby crabby!

Why did she grab that crawling crab?
She swallowed the crab to live in the shell.
I don’t know why she swallowed the shell.
She didn’t tell.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fish.

Keep stumbling on yellow and go straight where yellow goes right. (Can you walk a straight line?) Now you are on blue. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk – another color added to the mix! Come to the stone wall on your right. “Flounder” along the wall to its highest point. Flop along 4 more steps and look low behind 2 small rocks.

What a tickly dish, that swimming fish.
She swallowed the fish to catch the crab.
She swallowed the crab to live in the shell.
I don’t know why she swallowed the shell.
She didn’t tell.

There was an old lady who swallowed a gull.

Stay on blue passing side trails. At the top of the hill spin around, get dizzy, fall down, then go right on yellow. (yellow/blue is straight ahead – don’t go that way!) At the next intersection “bare right” – I mean “bear right” staying on yellow. This IS a FAMILY preserve here, but you may come across a well endowed tree at some point! (teehee) In a little way you can view water below on the left, but no diving from the trail. Just before going down a little hill, look for a midsized, blazed tree with 3 rocks at its feet – we believe they’re ticklish!

It wasn’t dull to swallow a gull.
She swallowed the gull to scoop up the fish.
She swallowed the fish to catch the crab.
She swallowed the crab to live in the shell.
I don’t know why she swallowed the shell.
She didn’t tell.

There was an old lady who swallowed a pail.

Follow yellow until you reach a rock overlook. Oh, we dreamed of tumbling off the ledge straight at the split, but where that trail splits you must take it in the northerly direction. (I was outvoted - boohoo) Just before it heads back up to the left, look for the blazed 2 sister tree on the right side. Look behind her in a rock Jambalaya!

She didn’t wail when she swallowed the pail.
She swallowed the pail to carry the gull.
She swallowed the gull to scoop up the fish.
She swallowed the fish to catch the crab.
She swallowed the crab to live in the shell.
I don’t know why she swallowed the shell.
She didn’t tell.

There was an old lady who swallowed some sand.

Head up (no hand stands here) that yellow trail on the left meandering along the woods awhile until you reach a small flat rock at the edge of a hill (cliff) with yet more arrows – pointing this way and that way on the rock. Take the “right” one and get tangled up in a rope or 2 following yellow trail until you reach the Groton Reservoir Overlook sign. Don't listen to the sign! Peer out over the scenery. Why would you want to "overlook" this view? Now bang your head on the sign 3 times, look due south, and take 6 steps.

Oh, how bland! To swallow sand!
She swallowed the sand to fill up the pail.
She swallowed the pail to carry the gull.
She swallowed the gull to scoop up the fish.
She swallowed the fish to catch the crab.
She swallowed the crab to live in the shell.
I don’t know why she swallowed the shell.
She didn’t tell.

There was an old lady who swallowed a wave.

Follow the yellow brick road through waves and waves of rocks. At the last Tsunami “check-out” a small tree at its base. “No change” required…

Swallowing a wave was such a big hassle,
that she suddenly burped…
and built a sand castle.

Continue on yellow (bla, bla, bla) taking a left at the arrow, don’t poke out your eyes or you’ll miss it! Keep going until you see a HUGE dead, downed tree cradled by very small maples in the woods on the left hand side of the trail. Rock a bye baby on the tree tops... Well, the tops are on the ground and what’s that on the back side of it?

The yellow trail will “take you” back to your car. It won’t “carry you” on its shoulders though. You’ll need to follow it, knucklehead!
