Civil Treasure (Adult instructions)

1. Begin your search in front of the restaurant “Jalisco”, 9403 Congress street in the historic district of New Market, VA. You may park in the lot adjacent to the restaurant. This is a great place to eat before or after your search. Face Jalisco’s. Turn left, and begin walking.

2. Stop at the blue sign that says, “Welcome to Historic New Market”. Get to know the area better by examining the map beneath the sign. Walk around the signs, and along the wall of the library.

3. Stop when you reach a small red door with a hooked handle; it should be open. Go through the door (watch your head), down the short corridor, and turn left.

4. To get an idea of what is was like in New Market during the mid-late 1800’s, notice this brick area behind the Library.

5. Try not to disturb any nesting birds. To find out more about old New Market, check out the bulletin board in the Library lobby

6. Go back out through the short corridor, and along the wall to the sidewalk. Cross the street to the Barber Shop. Be careful of the cars.

7. Face the shop, turn left, and walk about 7 spaces down the sidewalk. Turn right into the alley. To your right, on the brick wall, there should be what’s left of an old advertisement form (by my guess) the early 1900’s. Notice how much it cost for a newspaper subscription! ($1.50 a year)

8. Continue walking in the direction you were going down the sidewalk. Notice, on your way to the intersection, you’ll find the “Shop Civil War”, commemorating the battle of New Market, where over 200 cadets from the Virginia Military Institute made the difference between victory and defeat. Hear you can buy Civil War statuary, replicas, etc.

9. Continue walking towards the intersection. Watch for cars as you cross to the gas station, and again to the bank. Read the plaque on the corner of the bank to learn about one of the oldest homes in New Market.

10. Face the plaque, turn right, and continue your hike down the sidewalk. (Congress St.)

11. NOTE: The next area is a long walk off, so just keep walking straight.

12. Be sure to notice the numerous home and antique shops New Market has to offer.

13. Stop at 9295 Congress street (Historic Building # 17) and read the sign to learn more about old New Market.

14. Cross Breckinridge Lane (Named after General Breckinridge) to the white post with the large black object in it. That black thing is a replica rifle shell meant to symbolize how it was hit during the battle of New Market in 1864.

15. Walk up the sidewalk towards the church. You should find the letterbox in the small nook next to the stairs leading down, near the sign that says: “No bicycles, skateboards, skates on church property” (In the grass)

16. You should also visit the Civil War Museum

(Kids instructions)

Okay. So you want to find some Civil Treasure huh? Well, as long as you follow my directions, you’ll find it lickity-split! Start in the lobby of the New Market Library, at 947 Congress Street. Your family or group can park in the parking lot between the library and the Mexican restaurant.

Look at the address of the library. There’s a number missing. With a grown-up’s help, try and figure out what the missing number is.

Stand in the lobby of the library and check out the bulletin board on the wall to learn about old New Market.

Factoid: In 1864, during the Civil War, 4,100 rebel soldiers led by General Breckinridge attacked the Yankee army, who’s boss was General Sigel, in the Battle of New Market.

When you’re done looking at the bulletin board, go out the door, and stand in front of the library. Look at the Mexican restaurant, and take 7 giant steps towards it . Look around until you see the big yellow M at the McDonalds, and walk towards it.

Look for an open door in the big wall next to you. Go through it, walk to the end of the brick path, and stop.

Now pretend you’re standing in the middle of a giant clock, turn clockwise to look at the 9. Now walk until you see a little bush with stickers on your right. OUCH! Don’t touch!

Wow! Check out this area behind the library! It’s almost like we’ve gone back in time! Cool, huh?

Factoid: 1,146 men were killed or hurt during the Battle of New Market.

Uh-oh! I think I hear the Yankees coming! Quick, run back out the way you came in, and back into the library!
Good! We’re back in the safe old present! Okay. now go back out the library door, and act like you’re soldiers. Now march to the Suntrust clock! Now what time is it soldier?

Factoid: On May 15, 1864, 257 fought in the Battle of New Market, making the difference between victory and defeat!

Now that we know what time it is, let’s pretend we’re soldiers on leave! (“on leave” means vacation) Skip down to the red, white, and blue flag the says, “Welcome”. GO NO FURTHER!

Now before you cross the street, remember to stop, look, and listen. Cross when a grown-up says you may.

Stop and stand in front of the bank, under the sign. Begin walking up the sidewalk and count each step by 2’s. Stop when you reach 88. Check out the Christmas Gallery!

Now walk to the first tree on your side of the street. Keep walking, counting the trees on your side along the way.

Now add 6+5. What does it equal? That’s the number of the tree you need to stop at. Find the log house, and walk past it to the street corner. Look both ways, and cross the street.

Factoid: That white post next to you has a bullet in it. General Breckinridge was standing no more than 15 feet away from it when it was hit, more than 100 years ago.

Follow the sidewalk towards the church, saying the ABC’s with each step. When you reach Z, look for a sign that says “NO”, the letterbox is nearby.

Congratulations! You just found Civil Treasure!
