The Love Story of Beren and Luthien
Who wouldn’t love to live forever? The eLves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s book “The Lord of the Rings” were immortal. They could be killEd by weapons, but were immune to diseases and no worries about getting old, wrinkled or senile. Beren, a mortal man, fell head-over-heels in love with Luthien the very moment he caught sight of her dancing at moonrise one eveNing in a glade in the woods of Neldoreth. Luthien was a woman of great power and was elf-kind. She had the power of song – she could sing “spring” into being, sing down the battlements of Sauron’s dungeons in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, and sing Morgoth to sleep. Luthien’s love for Beren was so great that she willingly rusHed to save him from Sauron’s dungeon, helped him retrIeve Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown, followed him to death to the halls of Mandos, and even gave up her Elven imMortality to become a mere mortal like him. Beren used his love for Luthien as inspiration to achieve greatness. In the end, it was selfless versus the selfish qualities of love that made all the difference in the wOrld. ToLkien ended the story by emphasizing that altHough Luthien was only an elf to die and leave the confines of the world; her choice of morTality forever joined the two children of Iluvatarm the immortal Elves and mortal Men. Her choice was more like an innoCent taking on the death sentence of their partner in order to be with him. She preferred to live on borrowed time with Beren in Middle-earth than live eternally alone without hiM.
