STATUS: This box was GONE as of June 11, 2003. Well, at least, I think it was gone. There's a remote chance someone thoughtfully moved it to a spot higher up the tree...where I can't reach it. ;) However, unless I get confirmation that this happened (anyone?) I'm considering it GONE.
Prepare: you could get muddy feet if it's been wet lately, and you shouldn't go after dark. Take a friend if possible, if not try to go during the day on any weekday except Friday.
By vehicle:
You're seeking out a place of higher (but not WAY high) education on north Lancaster in Salem. Find the giant parking lot after lanes of trees, to the right, west of a cluster of numbered buildings. If you don't have a permit, take a visitor space (this is important if you don't want to be ticketed). You might want to get a visitor's pass if you'll be staying to explore or eat in the buildings - ask at the parking official's booth how to get a pass.
On foot:
Go west, away from the buildings, until you've left the parking lot. Cross the street and walk along the sidewalk (probably left/south). At the DAY USE ONLY sign turn onto the path into the trees.
Turn left at the bend in the path, leaving the gravel.
There may be a small path off to the left quite soon. Ignore it and continue until you reach a clearing which probably has a mud pit in it. You should be able to glimpse buildings through the trees to your right or ahead. Take a left here, at the fork in the clearing/mud pit.
This trail forks in a small, grassy clearing. Very small. There's a small tree and a stump to the left of the main path. Take the left fork.
Take the next left fork.
You may need to jump a branch to make a tight squeeze through some very small trees. Between large ferns, pause and look forward and up. You should see a large tree.
At this tree you'll find a place to stash gold doubloons or moonshine...but you'll have to settle for a letterbox.
