New Park

Location: Taine Mountain Preserve, Burlington, Hartford Co., Connecticut

Letterboxes: 2

Planted: 5/12/2008
Stamp: Carved by The Bird Stamper
Length: 1 mile round trip, 175 foot climb

Difficulty:
One steep hill to climb. Not recommended in wet, snowy, or icy conditions.

Description:
At the Winter Solve and Carve gathering, I carved a stamp to celebrate all the new parks I have found through letterboxing. So I had to find a park that did not have a letterbox to plant it. Through a lot of searching I found one.

From the intersection of routes 44, 202, and 179 in Canton, proceed south on 179 for four miles. At a traffic light at the junction of route 4, turn right onto route 4 west. Go one half mile to a flashing light and turn left onto Punch Brook Road. Go one point one mile to the second stop sign at Ryan’s Way. The entrance to the trail is across the road to the left. Find a safe place to park.

Enter woods on a trail with a blue blaze and a red dot. You will be following this trail. See signs for the Nature Conservancy preserve. Go down a slope and cross a dirt road and a stream. Up a slope will bring you to a stone wall. Walk twenty steps at 180 degrees along the wall. Here you will find a pile of rocks and the New Park box. Return to the trail and continue on.

Cross a dirt road with plain blue blazes to the left. Go straight and start climbing a hill. Take it slow and easy as this is a long hill. At the top come to a lookout where you can enjoy the view. You will see a plain blue blaze in front of you. Do not follow it. Make a hairpin turn to the right to find the blue with red dot blazes again.

Continue about one-hundred feet and spot a three foot high bolder on the right of the trail. Sight at 42 degrees and see a two-sister tree growing on top of a large rock. Walk thirty-two steps to the tree and find the Taine Mountain box behind it. Return the way you came. I hope you liked the hike and view.

Special permission for this letterbox was granted by the owner of this preserve. Others wishing to plant here should contact me and I will find out if permission can be extended.
