The Flying V letterbox can be found at the Flying J Ranch, located between Aspen Park and Evergreen on Highway 73. There are two entrances to the park, this letterbox is closer to the northern (main) entrance. If you care to take a longer hike, you can get to the box from the southern entrance on Shadow Mountain Drive,

If you pick up a trail map, you will learn why the park has such an unusual name. The park consists of "meadows, forests, wetlands and stream" which "provide habitat for songbirds, raptors and wintering elk".

From the main parking area, take the Shadow Pine Loop trail in a counter-clockwise direction. Within the first 1/2 mile, you will cross a stream and read two fire awareness information signs. At .5 miles, a trail veers off to the right to access a neighborhood - stay to the left at this junction.

After the third fire information sign, you will pass into Denver Mountain Park property. After you have traveled .85 miles from the starting point (and climbed 200 feet in elevation), you should encounter a large rock slab in the trail, with a fallen tree on the left side of the trail. Past the fallen tree are two tree stumps. The Flying V is hidden under rocks and bark on the north side of the smaller stump.

If you reach a second stream crossing, you have gone too far. Turn around and go back 55 steps. The smaller stump will be on your right, about 6 feet off the trail.

After stamping in, you can return the way you came, or continue along the Shadow Pine Loop trail until it intersects with a service road that will take you back to your vehicle.

If you turn back, the total hike is 1.7 miles. If you continue on and use the service road, the hike is 2.3 miles. If you take the entire Shadow Pine Loop trail, you will walk 3.1 miles.

The box contains a handcarved stamp and handmade logbook, but no ink. Please bring your own.
