In 1844, ten years before letterboxing began in Dartmoor National Park in England, Concord Baptist Church was started. The church began in a log building 3/4 miles west and 1/2 mile south of its present location. In 1852, the log building was moved to its present location and then replaced by a new building in 1858. A fire destroyed the church in April of 1911, but the congregation rebuilt, and the present structure was dedicated on October 8, 1911.

Over the years, Concord Baptist Church has developed a rich history:

1844 - The oldest record book lists the first constitution followed by a listing of members.

July 1859 - The first ordination of a minister mentioned in the records. G.L. Kesterson was ordained .

July 1862 through June 1866 - The church was closed due to the Civil War.

April 25, 1881 - The church voted to organize Sunday School.

May 1946 - Concord held its first Vacation Bible School (47 attended).

February 1-7, 1948 - The church hosted its first week of Foreign Missionaries.

May 16, 1948 - Concord Baptist Church witnessed its first wedding. Burton Turner and Delores Ruckdeschell were married.

1948 - The church was wired for electricity.

March 29, 1955 - There was a dedication for the new addition to the Church.

July 1960 – The first locks on the church were installed.

October 10, 1962 - New outdoor toilets were built

February 9, 1964 - Articles of Faith and Church Covenant approved by the congregation.

April 12, 1967 - The church signed up for “city water.”

May 7, 1975 - The Constitution was reviewed and the final vote of adoption was made.

March 1978 - The two separate entrance doors were removed and the present double doors were installed. Previously, there was a wall separating the two entrances and the sanctuary to divide men and women. There are stories of young couples holding hands over this wall. We are unsure when the wall was removed.

January 7, 1986 - Concord Baptist Church became incorporated.

December 6, 1987 - Baptistry Dedicated.

1989 - Barbara Reynolds presented a gift of the stained glass windows for the Baptistry in memory of James Reynolds.

September 4, 1991 - Larry Turner salvaged wood from a 100-year-old cedar tree from the cemetery to make the cross. It was presented as a gift to the church and installed above the pulpit in 1992.

November 4, 1992 - Siding completed on exterior of church.

June 26, 1994 - 150th Anniversary Celebration.

Sitting atop the hill at 2899 Baptist Lane, Bates City, MO 64011 Concord Baptist Church strives to continue to be a light for the world.

In Bates City take Hwy Z south. Turn east (Left) on Concord Church Road. Drive past the cemetery to the top of the hill and make a right turn onto Baptist Lane. Park near the white fence and walk towards the double doors at the entrance. On your right you will see a black wheelchair ramp. Under this ramp you will find the Concord Baptist Church letterbox.
