FALL 2009 - THIS ENTIRE SERIES WAS MUGGLED. ONE BOX WAS RESQUED...I HOPE TO RE-CARVE & REPLANT THE OTHERS SOON...

Box #1: Lake Frank Turtle

This box was originally placed on August 20, 2000 by Squirrel, who was (from what I understand) one of Maryland’s original letterboxers. I found the box in March 2007, full of maggots and rot. After contacting Squirrel, I have adopted Turtle and added some friends. I’d classify this as a Moderate Hike. Maybe about 1 mile roundtrip-ish. The trail is very hilly, rocky and narrow at times. It is not stroller or bike friendly, but is leashed-dog friendly. Contact me if there are problems with any of the boxes in this series.

Take Avery Road to Lake Frank. Park in lot.
Follow the paved path down the hill to a fork in the road. Go left.
At next fork, opposite.
At 3rd fork, go opposite to last.
At 4th fork, go opposite to last again.
Veer left down a very steep hill. Shew! At the bottom. Can you see the Dam wall & tower? Can you hear the rush of the Dam water?
Go uphill, up the other side.
When the path splits, take the high road to the top of the hill and continue.
At the bottom of the trail you will see God’s stonewall on the left.
Lake Frank Turtle is waiting for you at the base of a tree on top of the wall (about 3 ft back).
Watch out for poison ivy!
Enjoy the view while stamping-in and replace Turtle carefully.

Box #2: Lake Frank Frog

Return to the trail and go back up the hill you came down.
At the top of the hill, find the big (not huge) tree on your left; faint path on right. Take it.
Take 40 paces (1 pace = 1 footfall) to the more frequented path. Go right.
Cross the troll bridge.
Notice huge old downed tree fording upstream.
Go left.
At the 3rd blue blaze (or 1st red), go left again.
Pass the ‘fingers’ of the huge old tree you noticed.
At the red blaze on a small 2-in-1, go left.
Lake Frank Frog hides at the base of the very knobbly tree.
Enjoy the contents and please replace Frog carefully.

Box #3: Lake Frank Fish

Go back out to the red trail. Go right.
Right onto blue trail.
Pass troll bridge.
In wet season, ford swampy area.
Continue to near the Lake’s edge.
Look right, smile, and wave to Turtle upon the stonewall. :)
Go left up the small hill.
Enjoy the beautiful flat-ish walk.
Find yourself back near the waters edge.
Wow! It’s a baby tree nursery. Hike thru.
Walk away from the shore to the fallen tree.
Go left onto blue blaze trail.
At the 4th blue blaze, Fish is treading water at the base of the big stump on the right.
Stamp-in discretely and re-hide Fish carefully.

To get back to your car, follow the blue blaze trail all the way back to the troll bridge and cross it. Go up the hill. Stay on main wide trail, up the steep hill to the paved path. Go right onto the pavement, up the hill to the parking lot.
