Travel a couple of miles south from Heart City on 83 to the parking area for the Cowboy Trail, a 321 mile long rails to trails project. One of the most spectacular points along the trail is the quarter mile long trestle crossing high above the Niobrara River.
At one end of this towering span, ponderosas stand sentinel upon a ridge, overlooking a fence line to the north. Walk east along this fence until you are beside a pair of baby pines. At their feet, look beneath a rusty spike.
