BICAS stands for Bicycle Inter-Community Action and Salvage:
"A cooperatively-run non-profit Community Center that through bicycle advocacy and recycling of the bicycle promotes education, art, and a healthy environment while providing services and opportunity for those in need."
That's the official one sentence description. It doesn't begin to describe this vibrant place.
BICAS offers classes and shop space to anyone who wants to ride a bike. You can take their Build-a-Bike class and make your own bike from scratch out of salvage bike parts, or learn basic maintenance, or learn to make metal sculptures and other bicycle related art.

Here are my 10 favorite things about BICAS:
1. I love the stencil art on the walls around the parking area. My favorite is the child reading to an elephant. What's yours?
2. Regular free bicycle-themed Bike-In movies, projected on the wall outside.
3. They offer a Build-a-Bike class, where participants make their own bikes from scratch out of salvage parts.
4. You can fix your own bike at BICAS, using their tools, space, parts and help.
5. It's totally kid-friendly.
6. They play great music.
7. The people who work there are friendly and make you feel welcome to come in and explore (letterboxers won't be questioned).
8. There's a really cool bike-powered blender (look around behind the T-shirt rack) if you want to make a smoothie.
9. If you like treasure hunts (and I know you do!), you'll love BICAS' Annual Bicycle Scavenger Hunt! (every spring)
10. You can rent a bike here for $5/day. There is no easier, more fun way to go looking for those downtown letterboxes than by bicycle!

So go to BICAS.
Once you're there, before you make a dash for the BICAS letterbox, take some time to explore outside and inside. You're welcome to wander around anywhere as long as you don't interfere with a class.

The letterbox is inside, so you'll have to come when they're open. Hours are Tuesday - Friday: 12 - 7 PM, Saturday: 12 - 6PM Closed Monday
Women-only hours: Sundays 1 - 5 PM
Best to not come letterboxing on Fridays between 4-7PM, when there will be a class in the Art Area and you won't have any privacy.

Once you've explored around inside, wander over to the Art Area, under 1413, and have a seat at the table with the metal legs where you will have a good view of the whole room. Run your hands along the inside edge of the table. Mmmmm-hhmmmmmm! You can sit right there and stamp, or you can go outside and sit under the tree at the picnic table made from bike parts.

Have fun! I always enjoy hearing from you.
