In Stafford Springs, heading East on Route 190, take a right onto Willington Avenue, just past town hall and the rotary.
After almost a half mile, you will see Icehouse Road on your left, just after a hill and a curve. It's easy to miss! Turn onto that road, and drive to the very end, where there is a sandy parking area in front of a pond.
Icehouse Road was so named because of the icehouse that had once been situated here. Before the refrigerator was invented, ice was stored throughout the year in ice houses. They were usually man-made structures close to natural sources of winter ice like a lake or a pond. Each winter, ice was chopped from the lake and brought to the ice house. It would then be insulated with straw or sawdust, where it would stay frozen for several months. Later in the year, the ice would be delivered from the ice houses to houses and businesses in ice wagons. Ice houses were once a major part of the early New England economy, but for the most part disappeared by the 1960s.
