John O. Meusebach was born Baron Otfried Hans von Meusebach on May 26, 1812. He was at first a Prussian bureaucrat, later an American farmer, politician, and member of the Texas Senate. He was born in Dillenburg, Duchy of Nassau. Upon arriving in Texas, he dropped his noble title and became simply John O. Meusebach. In 1845 he became the second commissioner general of The Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas, succeeding Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels. For Prince Carl, Meusebach oversaw the development of New Braunfels, Texas and as commissioner of the Society, he founded the town of Fredericksburg, Texas, which became a home for many German Texans. On May 9, 1847, he met with Penatuka Comanche Chief Santanna, shared a peace pipe and signed a treaty between the People of Fredericksburg and the Comanche Nation. More than 20 other chiefs also participated in the treaty. This treaty is the ony known peace treaty with Native Americans in United States history thought never to be broken. Unbroken Promises that became Lasting Friendship. The spirit of this treat continues in Fredericksburg today.

Directions:
North across Main Street from the Gillespie County Courthouse in Fredericksburg is the city square. Look for the Vereins Kirche (Community Church), which is a distinctive octagon-shaped building and is used today as a museum. Behind the building is a lovely garden. That’s where you want to be.

To the box:
Find the waterwheel in the center of the garden and go to the east side of it. Here you will see a bronze statue called “Lasting Friendship”. After you admire the bronze, read the plaque, then walk to the right, clockwise, past the green bench and sit on the big white boulder. Behind it, on the left end as you sit, protected by a couple of small rock, you should find the box. Be sure to replace the box in such a way that it can’t be seen by the gardener. This is a public place, so use the necessary amount of stealth.
