From Route 30 East, turn left at the light onto Route 233 North by the Thaddaeus Stevens Ironworks Furnace. Continue and pass the main entrance of Caledonia State Park. Shortly after, you will pass a pond on your left. Continue driving a short distance and you will see a sign for "Organized Group Tent Camping". Turn left and park your vehicle in this area.

Cross over the parking lot toward the camp sites. Go left onto Midland Trail. Follow this trail through the campsites. Cross over over a culvert/bridge and at the intersection of Midland and Thaddaeus Stevens Trail, go right. Continue along the T.S. trail until the trail's end. Directly in front of you will be an "L" shaped dam/ spillway. Cross over the dam exiting off the long arm of the "L".

From the edge of the long arm head straight counting 60 single step paces. The creek is nearby on your left. At the first clump of Mountain Laurel (Pennsylvania's State Flower), bear slightly left. From this point you should be able to see a second clump of Laurel near to where your sixty paces end. Under the Laurel you will find a stump. Look behind the rocks placed in front of the stump to find Thadd's Salamander's cozy little home. Be alert. You may get a glimpse of him outside of his dwelling enjoying his beautiful surrounding. I, too agree with Thadd's Salamander that this is one of my favorite places to enjoy the glory of nature.

ALTERNATE/ SCENIC EDUCATIONAL ROUTE:
Park your vehicle at the Thaddaeus Stevens Ironworks Furnace at the intersection of Route 30 and Route 233 North. Stop to read the history of the furnace before hiking the trail. Take notice of the T.S. Blacksmith Shop across Route 233 through the trees.

Take the T.S. trail that leads up the hill behind the furnace. Passing the top of the waterfall continue the trail with Route 233 on your left. Notice the rustic structures to your right along this section of trail.

After a short distance you will come to a small bridge on your right. Cross 233 and continue up along its edge, being careful of traffic. (Remember to walk against traffic.) Soon you will come the pond on your left. Follow the T.S. trail around to the back of the pond, and then along the stream that feeds the pond. Soon you will come to where the T.S. trail intersects with the Midland Trail. Resume previous instructions.

This is a kid friendly hike. Dogs must be on leashes. It is not a difficult or long hike.
