July 2011 - The second box may be missing.
You should consider parking at the Roaring Brook Nature Center on Gracey Rd and taking the trail from there. The clues below would pick up from where it crosses Bahre Corner Rd. There are a lot of other boxes in the area so check them all out.

There’s a small section of the Nepaug State Forest on either side of Bahre Corner Rd. in Canton that I’ve driven by almost every day without noticing the trail entrance. I finally noticed it and headed in and it is definitely worth the hike. This will take you about 45 minutes. Bring bug spray.

Directions: From Rt. 44 take either Lawton Rd. or East Hill Rd. north. From Lawton, stay left at the first stop sign. At the next one turn sharply left for Bahre Corner Rd. (For Gracey and the Nature Center, go sort of straight across.) The trail will be .3 miles on the left.

From East Hill go about a mile to Bahre Corner (there’s no sign but it says that on some maps) and turn right on Bahre Corner Rd. The trail is 1.1 miles on the right.
There’s actually trails on both sides of the road but you want the south side. (To get to the Nature Center, keep going to the next intersection and take a sharp left.)

Parking is iffy here but you should be able to pull off on the south side of the road. Cars can go a little fast around here so be careful.

Clues: Follow the yellow trail to #3. Go right. The next number will be #14. (I know, we probably should have gone the other way.) Cross a swamp, ford a brook, #13, cross silver and black trail, thru wall, cross green trail, at 12 go right. (Left is probably ok too. The meet up at #10.) Watch the down hill, it can be slippery with the rocks and pine needles. #11 must be on the other trail. After 10 go through the artistic rock field. Stop and pile a few then keep on yellow. 9 is off to the left. At the root end of the sling shot look for box #1, Just 4 U. (Thanks to Bunny Butt for the carving.)

Now keep going on yellow. Another swamp/stream, yellow blaze – is that a claw mark? – another brook and another with a tree bridge, #8, #6 (we missed 7), #5. Look behind for box #2, A Whale of a Trail, in a piece of rotted log.

Keep on yellow past #4 and join up with 3 again and back to your car.

I wasn’t able to find a trail map or anything else to explain the numbers.
