The Whisker Lake Wilderness Area is part of the Nicolet National Forest. It is located off State Highway 70, eleven miles west of Florence, Wisconsin. Before you go, stop at the Florence Natural Resources and Visitor Center in Florence for maps of the area - it is easy to get lost. Please be discreet and do not mention letter boxing. This will involve a round trip of about 2 miles.

At the junction of Forest Road 2150 and Hwy 70, go north on 2150 three miles. Count 2 entrances on the east side of the road into the wilderness area. At the 3rd entrance, about 1/2 mile past Forest Road 2151, park your vehicle. Your hike begins here, about 1 mile in from FR2150. While you are passing through a lovely pine forest, there will be a fork on the right. Take that to Whisker Lake. There is no sign for this.

Whisker Lake Box:
This lake was named for the large pines around its shoreline that escaped logging and fire. They are big and beautiful. They were called 'chin whiskers'. Whisker Lake has a pair of nesting loons. There is also a beaver dam across the outlet to the lake.

At the campsite on the lake's edge you will find that a log has fallen over the path. Stand on the path that is blocked next to the log and sight your compass at 300 degrees (NW). You will see a clump of 5 birches about 14 paces (28 steps) along this line. The box is hidden in the middle of the birches.

Other trails take you to lakes Riley and Camp 13. These are lovely lakes with nesting loons, eagles and osprey.

If you attempt this lovely hike, please drop me a line. It is a special place.

Hike length: 1-2 miles
