The causeway connecting Colchester to South Hero, also known as "The Fill" was originally constructed by the Rutland Railroad Company in 1899 in a bold effort to circumvent the Vermont Central Railroad in creating a connection to the north and west out of Burlington. It is a remarkable, three mile long, marble riprap causeway with sweeping views of Mallets Bay and the Green Mountains to the East and Lake Champlain and the Adirondaks to the west.

Make sure to bring your own stamp pad and writing instrument. I recommend royal blue ink for the stamp.

Park in the Mills Point Road Lot, which is the closest public parking available to the causeway trailhead. To get there, find your way to Colchester Point Road, reset your odometer at the big tree at the entrance of Airport Park, continue westward, bear right at the fork onto Mills Point Road. When your odometer reads 1.1 miles, keep your eyes peeled for a small, gravel parking lot on your right. Park there. Continue on foot down the road until it intersects the bike path.

Take the path to the left (all following mileage measurements are from this point). The first stretch is through a marshy forest bordering a residential area. After 0.37 miles, the forest will give way to the lake first on the right, then on the left. At this point, look straight ahead and you will see the nearby Law Island. Continue on.

Soon you will begin to see the more distant Sunset Island appear beyond the north end of Law Island. Walk on until you see the southern end of Sunset Island Appear at the north end of Law Island. Stop, and you will see a very distinctive looking tree on your left, reaching its branches desparately to the south out over the lake. Walk to the point on the trail nearest the tree, turn around, and walk back 18 steps. Stop and turn to your right (facing southeast). You will see a dark-colored block of metamorphic rock with its long axis pointing to the west. Look beneath this rock, and you will find the letterbox with a flat, white piece of marble on top of it. Notice that the tree on the stamp is the one you found earlier.

Please re-hide the box carefully, replace the flat piece of marble on top of it to prevent it from being washed away by a rogue wave. Important: please make sure the box cannot be seen from the path when you are done.
