This is our very first box! We placed it to celebrate the 9th anniversary of our wedding, which took place in Lincoln on June 1, 1999.

Before the wedding, we took pictures at the DeCordova sculpture park , which is where the trail to this box begins. You have to pay admission to get into the park and museum, but it's a gorgeous place and definitely worth it! (The box itself is on public land, but we're not sure how to access it without going through DeCordova first.)

Park in the far (north) corner of the DeCordova parking lot. You'll see a trail going into the woods marked "Public Water Supply". As soon as you enter the woods, another trail goes off to the right; ignore it and continue straight, toward Flint's Pond (which you can glimpse through the trees).

Follow the trail about 100 yards until you see a huge stone fireplace on your right. Continue to where the trail crosses two low stone walls in close succession. When you're between the walls, you'll notice yet another wall running parallel to the path on your right. Step over this wall and start walking uphill, away from the pond. You'll find yourself on a sort of road through the woods, bordered on either side by low stone walls.

Go approximately 50 steps until you see a large flat rock on the left side of the "road". Climb onto the rock and stand in the middle, still facing uphill along the road. Just behind the wall to your left, at 10 o'clock, is a pair of (elm?) trees growing right next to each other, perhaps from a common root. One is big and tall, the other thin and wiggly.

The box is hidden inside a hole in the wall at the base of the trees. The hole is closed off by a small keystone -- the only stone in the vicinity that is small enough to move easily (with one hand). Please replace it over the hole when you are done.

Once you get back down to the path, you can continue for a really nice walk around Flint's Pond. It takes 1-2 hours (depending on how fast you walk). Or you can just go back to DeCordova and tour the museum and sculpture garden. Be sure to check out the rooftop terrace at the top of the tower: the view from there is fantastic.

Enjoy!

2017 Note: I have adopted this box from the original planter. I dried out the logbook and replaced the box.

There are a couple of big trees down across the trail across the rock you're supposed to stand on. So it's best to approach the box along the far side of the second stone wall - you can still see the rock and probably figure out the right tree without too much trouble.
