Great Cedars East Conservation Area
Merritt Lane
Old Saybrook, CT

Parking - Take right up the hill before “private” sign and park your car in the area on right. This Stooge adventure is a little less than four miles easy hiking.

There was an old lady who swallowed a trout
That splished and splashed and thrashed about.
It wanted out!
Begin at the RIGHT yellow in the parking area and say “good riddance” as you pass by the huge oaky tree on the left. As the trail levels off, spy a large whale rock on the right, its body muscling a tree.

There was an old lady who swallowed a salmon
That slippity-flippity-flopped as it swam in.
She swallowed the salmon to catch the trout
That splished and splashed and thrashed about.
It wanted out!
Continue on yellow. Cross a bridge. At an intersection, take red. Trip over a stone wall and look left where cedar is eating a rock.

There was an old lady who swallowed an otter
With a mug of clear water, she swallowed the otter.
She swallowed the otter to catch the salmon;
She swallowed the salmon to catch the trout
That splished and splashed and thrashed about.
It wanted out!
At next intersection of red and red, go left on red. Continue until you stumble on blue on left. Pick yourself up, knucklehead and take blue, crossing the causeway. Keep an eye out for a leaning black birch on left before going uphill. Pop your eye back in and look behind, down, and under the birch’s feet.

There was an old lady who swallowed seal
She let out a squeal when she swallowed the seal.
She swallowed the seal to catch the otter;
She swallowed the otter to catch the salmon;
She swallowed the salmon to catch the trout
That splished and splashed and thrashed about.
It wanted out!
Drag your butt on blue to the end, which brings you to the power lines. Get over to that double blue blaze on the stunted 3 ½ foot stumpy! ABOUT FACE! What is that under that laurel due east (100 degrees)?

There was an old lady who swallowed a porpoise.
She did it on purpose; she swallowed the porpoise.
She swallowed the porpoise to catch the seal;
She swallowed the seal to catch the otter;
She swallowed the otter to catch the salmon;
She swallowed the salmon to catch the trout
That splished and splashed and thrashed about.
It wanted out!
Continue back towards the causeway on blue. “Cross” over bridge, but don’t be “angry”. Later, cross over stone wall. Keep eyes opened now as you look for a small unmarked trial on right. If you close them, you’ll miss it, Dummy! (Can you tell that Moe is writing the clues?) When you reach it – STOP! Can you spy the 2 signs posted down the unmarked trail – one is white and one is orange? ABOUT FACE! 75 degrees to another tree and rock fighting for position!

There was an old lady who swallowed a walrus.
With a great deal of fuss, she swallowed the walrus.
She swallowed the walrus to catch the porpoise;
She swallowed the porpoise to catch the seal;
She swallowed the seal to catch the otter;
She swallowed the otter to catch the salmon;
She swallowed the salmon to catch the trout
That splished and splashed and thrashed about.
It wanted out!
Traipse on blue in the causeway direction until you come to an intersection. Turn left on red and go to the power lines. ABOUT FACE! Walk back until you see a grapevine hanging on the left almost over the trail just around the corner. After swinging on it and yelling like Tarzan, look off trail to the left for a 2 sister tree with cousin in front of it. Don’t even think of checking in the small ledge in front of that cousin, because you might find something, dimwit!

There was an old lady who swallowed a whale.
From its tip to its tail, she swallowed that whale.
She swallowed the whale to catch the walrus;
She swallowed the walrus to catch the porpoise;
She swallowed the porpoise to catch the seal;
She swallowed the seal to catch the otter;
She swallowed the otter to catch the salmon;
She swallowed the salmon to catch the trout
That splished and splashed and thrashed about.
It wanted out!
Continue on the red trail away from power lines, pass by blue (but don’t pass out, we’re not saving you) and now watch for intersection of red and red. Go left on red and up towards jumbly ledgey. Continue to power lines – ABOUT FACE! Is that Maple trying to “muscle” the stone wall on the left? “Wave – good riddance!” to the rock on its left side.

There was an old lady who swallowed the ocean.
What a commotion! She swallowed the ocean!
She swallowed the ocean to hold the whale
That now had plenty of room for its tail.
She swallowed the whale to catch the walrus;
She swallowed the walrus to catch the porpoise;
She swallowed the porpoise to catch the seal;
She swallowed the seal to catch the otter;
She swallowed the otter to catch the salmon;
She swallowed the salmon to catch the trout
That splished and splashed and thrashed about.
It wanted out!
Go back on red away from power lines. At the red versus red intersection, go left, and when you reach the big champion go right on yellow. When you “hit the road” – ABOUT FACE! Ha! (only kidding – nyuk, nyuk, nyuk!) Go left onto the road then down and part way uphill. Just before the big pile of rocks on the left, look behind a 3- sister tree about 30 feet off trail.

The old lady started to wriggle and jiggle;
The swirling inside made her hiccup and giggle.
It made her laugh; it made her shout,
And when the old lady opened her mouth…
She let out the ocean, the whale, and the walrus,
She let out the porpoise she’d swallowed on purpose;
The seal, the otter, the salmon and trout,
Splished and splashed and thrashed all about,
And they all swam
OUT!!!
Continue in the direction you were going to get back to your car, Knucklehead!
