Old Abe the war eagle, in the spring of 1861 a band of Chippewa came to the McCann farm and traded a young eagle for corn. The eagle was offered as a mascot for civil war duty. On October 12, 1861 the eagle regiment started for the front. The eagle served with the regiment for 42 skirmishes and battles, and lost only a few feathers. After threes years of service old able was formally presented to the state of Wisconsin on September 26, 1864 where he lived at the capital until he died on March 28, 1881.

By Car: drive to Jim Falls (hwy 178 or county road S) locate dam on the Chippewa River. On south side and city side of dam there is an eagle sculpture, parking is located next to the fire number 19760 easily seen from the eagle. When facing the eagle to the left (American flag side)notice two pine trees. Go behind (by the fence) between the pines, and look into the right one, the eagle is perched on a branch.

This is a 19.5 mile trail from Chippewa Falls to Cornell. This requires a state trail pass to bike but free for hikers.
