Cobban Bridge
Trail length walk about ½ mile
Backtop bike trail

Checked 3/25 all ok
The Cobban Bridge was constructed in 1908. It is a two span overhead truss believed to be the oldest is Wisconsin.

By car: Drive along Highway 178 between Jim Falls and Cornell find the historical marker near a very old bridge, stop to read about the bridge. Now the scary part, are you ready to cross that bridge? Don’t mind it at all, it rattles a little but is still strong. Go across and continue on TT to the right about 4 tenths of a mile from the bridge there is a fisherman’s parking area to the right, a good place to park.

Walk the bike trail north pass the 1912 store; pass the old brick house (use to be a blacksmith shop) pass the bench. You will come to the road, (you may cheat and park somewhere closer here if you can find a safe spot to park) stop before you cross and walk back (south) about 85 steps. Notice a rusty culvert to the right at the open or mouth, there are two groups of basswood trees in front of one has a railroad tie, under is your prize. You may have to look hard among plants to locate the box. Please keep a look out what kind of plants, there wasn’t many when I was there and woodticks.

By Bike: Car parking in Jim Falls and Cornell please refer to maps at web sites:

Bike until you see the old town of Cobban, the railroad trestle (bike trail bridge where there is the fisherman’s parking area) passes very edge of this old town. The Cobban Bridge spans across the Chippewa River and will be visible from the trail. This bridge is about 5 miles south of Cornell and about 5 miles north of Jim Falls by bike. Continue with directions above.
