Hopland was named for and used to derive much of its income from the growing and harvesting of hops. These days I’m not sure you could find a cultivated hops plant in the whole of Mendocino County. Nowadays Hopland has acquired another identity, in part due to the Solar Living Institute and Real Goods, purveyor of all things natural, “Real Goods Sustainable Products for Green Living and Solar Lifestyles.” This letterbox, Green Sol, is inspired by both the image and the mission of Real Goods. If you have time stop by and visit the store. Its entrance is on the south end of Hopland on Hwy. 101. Walk around the grounds and don’t forget to see their “weird restrooms.” Actually, they’re not all that weird, and usually they’re clean and provisioned. They ask a donation of $1 at the entrance to the grounds.

To find the Green Sol Letterbox in Hopland you’ll need to locate a whole other dude from another time, a sainted soul who also advocated natural living and pleasure from the sun. In downtown Hopland on the highway find the Hopland Superette and park. From the Superette walk to the nearest street corner in the direction of 101 north. Turn west at the corner and walk to the tall white building at the end of the street. See the dude’s statue? From there look to the southeast at the corner (the closest corner to the statue) of the aforementioned tall building. At that corner next to the building and resting on the ground a few feet west of the corner about 1 1/2 feet under various saintly vegetation will be the Green Sol Letterbox.

Please be discreet and replace carefully. Not sure how long this box will last . . .
