Bring your own ink. Park at the Grand Traverse Heritage Center, 322 Sixth Street. This is also the site of the old Traverse City Library.

The Grand Traverse Heritage Center hosts Native American displays, logging history, Traverse City historical records & photos, local memorabilia, and special exhibits. More information can be found at http://www.gtheritagecenter.org/museum.asp. Call 231-995-0313 for hours & more information.

The homes along Sixth Street were built during the late 1800’s – early 1900’s and included some of the most prestigious addresses in town. Across from the Heritage Center is the 40 room house originally built by Perry Hannah, Traverse City’s renowned lumber baron. In 1891, Hannah began work on his “dream house” at the corner of Sixth & Pine and upon it’s completion a few years later it was considered the finest home in Traverse City. This house now holds a funeral home.

Also across the street at 325 is Sunnybank. A private home with a secret English style garden, the garden can be toured generally from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 9-7. Please check the sign on the gate before entering.

A nice history of this area can be found in a book available at the Heritage Center: Grand Traverse Legends, Vol. 1 – The Early Years.

With your back to the Heritage Center, turn left & start walking along the sidewalk towards Pine Street. Take the concrete steps to your left down to the path on the first level & turn left. Grab a doggy pick up bag and continue following the trail – the Boardman River will be on your right side.

Almost before this trail ends at Wadsworth & Fifth Streets, you will see a trail that goes down a smallish hill towards the river. Go down the hill & take this new trail to your right. The river is now on your left side. Follow this path until you see the first cluster of trees in the grassy area. A 2x3 cammo box in hidden on the river side of a multi trunked tree.

Please use many, many sticks woven into the trunks to re-hide & secure this box.
