Frodo and the Hobbits toiled through a rocky land. Then suddenly the trees came to an end and the mists were left behind. They stepped out of the forest and found a wide sweep of grass welling up before them. The path was now plain before them, it wound up to the top of a grassy knoll and there, still high above them they saw the twinkling lights of a house – made of solid stone and roofed with turves.
Already half their weariness and all their fears had fallen from them. ‘Hey! Come merry dol!’ rolled out to great them.

“Ho Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombaderry
Under the sky, above the hill, among the wild blueberry!
Hey now! Come hoy now! Wither do you wonder?
Up, down, near or far, here, there, or yonder?
You walked the path that Rose to here, high above the sea.
Treasures only weigh you down – Hobbit’s should listen to me!
Down to find an ancient Ring, set with Crystal white,
Treasure to make your heart sing, and your smile bright.
Not jewels or pearls or gold, or swords of ancient yore.
But find my own, old leathern tome, a book of mighty lore!”

Tom wore a jacket of bright blue, matched by his tall, loose hat - and he wore bright yellow boots. He certainly seemed jolly: brown as a nut, rosy as an apple, with a full beard. The hobbits ran over to the strange, small man – if man he was. Tom held up a hand and they froze as if struck dumb. “Now my Hearties,” he said. “What brings you out on such a quest?” “Is it an homage, is it an anniversary, are you engaged in Tomfoolery?” he asked – with a twinkle in his eye.

“No master,” one cried. “We seek the answer to a riddle.”

Tom smiled, put his finger to his nose, and vanished in a wink.

Postscript:

‘Eh, what?’ said Tom sitting up, and his eyes glinting in the gloom. ‘Don’t you know my name yet? That’s the only answer. Who are you, alone and nameless? Eldest, that’s what I am. Mark my words my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first rain drop and the first acorn.
