Shortly after 11pm on July 6, 1881, a train engine and its crew that was checking the track conditions plunged into Honey Creek near Moingona, Iowa, after storms and flash flooding took out the bridge. In the midst of the storm, a teenage girl named Kate Shelley heard the crash and risked her life by crawling across the treacherous wooden railroad trestle that crossed the Des Moines River to reach the Moingona station. She warned the station personnel to stop the midnight train that was carrying 200 passengers then helped to rescue two of the men that had fallen into Honey Creek.

Directions to Moingona:
From Boone, head west on Hwy 30. After crossing the Des Moines River (which Kate crawled across), go just over a mile to R18 (L Ave.). Turn left and go south on R18 for less than a mile to Moingona Rd. Turn left on Moingona Rd, which will take you into the town of Moingona, and follow the signs to Kate Shelley Park.

This museum is a recreated 19th century railroad passenger station that is on the exact site where the railroad depot stood in 1881. If it is open, you can see some artifacts and photos relating to Kate’s life as well as other railroad memorabilia. Admission is free, but hours are very limited. If you’d like to visit the inside of the museum, you should call ahead for an appointment.

Park near the depot and look at the informational signs there about Kate. Then, walk along the south side of the depot. As you approach the passenger car on your right, look to your left for a larger rock near the corner of the depot. Reach behind the rock to find Kate.
