Many of Colorado’s talented letterboxers have planted ‘boxes at the Animas Overlook. Follow the directions for Jack-in-the-Green or Animas Overlook letterboxes to get to the trailhead.

The wildernet.com web site describes the views from the Animas Overlook:
You can see panoramic vistas of the high peaks to the north and east, with Animas Valley in the foreground. To the south are views of Durango and the mesa country. Animas Overlook is accessible to the disabled. The trail is paved and gently sloping, to aid the use of wheelchairs. The vault toilets have wide doors and handrails.

I imagine that this is the kind of place you can see eagles flying over southwestern Colorado.

Find the overlook sign describing water. It may be a little off the beaten path from the other signs. Stand at the eastern edge of the bench at this overlook. Take 14 steps east. You will see fallen logs on the north side of the trail. Look on the northern end of these logs for “Where Eagles Fly”.

Box is a camoflagued lock and lock container. It contains a hand carved stamp, hand made journal and first finders prize. Please bring your own ink. Remember to REHIDE well and secure it from wandering downhill. Thanks!
