Many people have heard the legend of the Tortoise and the Hare. Only very clever letterboxers know that the legendary race took place at a state park in Chippewa Falls named for a large lake there. Note there is a fee for Wisconsin state parks.

In the days of the first animals, there lived a very pleasant, slow moving, hard working, hard shelled fellow by the name of Eltrut. He was beloved in all the land. At this time there also lived a soft, fluffy, very fast, very arrogant animal by the name of Tibbar. Tibbar was not much beloved by his fellow forest creatures (and that is all I will say about that for the time being).

I have already mentioned that Tibbar was very fast. He believed that being fast was the greatest thing in the whole world and he couldn’t stand the idea of Eltrut being so popular and being so slow.

Day after day and week after week Tibbar challenged Eltrut to race after race. Tibbar believed that beating Eltrut at a race would make him more popular than Eltrut. Eltrut always acknowledged that Tibbar was in fact faster than he was and that there was no need for a race to prove it. Secretly, Eltrut believed that he might actually beat Tibbar because Tibbar was known to be not only arrogant, but often a bit lazy as well. Tibbar kept making challenges and then he started harassing all of Eltrut’s friends like the wise old Owl and the industrious Beaver. The Owl and the Beaver made Tibbar promise that if Eltrut raced Tibbar he would agree to stop harassing everyone. They then talked Eltrut into agreeing to the race just to get rid of Tibbar.

On the day of the race, all of the animals flocked to support Eltrut knowing that he could not win. Those animals needed to walk all the way to the end of the park past the family campground and beach and to the last parking lot in the park. Drive to the last lot in the park and park there.

The race would start at the East side of the parking lot on the Staghorn trail. The entire loop is 2.3 miles on easy terrain, but the race was to end where the Staghorn Trail met the Jack Pine trail.

The race began to cheers for Eltrut from all the forest creatures. As expected, however, Tibbar ran off to a large lead as he was much better built for speed and did not have to carry his house on his back. As Tibbar ran, he noted a sign post where the Staghorn trail joins the Nature trail for just a bit. Shortly after that the trails split again Tibbar went left to stay on the Staghorn trail (which was the agreed upon route). Stay on the Staghorn trail and wait to find the next trail map.

Feeling good about staying on the Staghorn path and knowing that he was far ahead of Eltrut, Tibbar came to another multi intersection with a park map. That is when the lazy side of Tibbar came out and he decided he had plenty of time to take a nap and still beat Eltrut in the race.

The forest creatures say that if you stand at the map and take a compass reading of 325 degrees you will see a three trunked tree 27 steps away where Tibbar is still napping.

In the meantime, Eltrut continued on his way. From the map where Tibbar stopped running, Eltrut went West (or left if you are facing the sign). Eltrut passed a bench on his right and kept chugging along the Staghorn trail. Eventually, Eltrut saw the finish line where the Staghorn and Jack Pine Trails meet. All the animals were waiting there and cheering in disbelief that Eltrut had won.

As he crossed the finish line Eltrut looked for a place to celebrate. The forest creatures know that if you take a compass reading of 185 degrees from the map at the intersection of the Staghorn and Jack Pine trails and walk 55 steps to a birch tree, you can often find Eltrut celebrating in some broken logs next to the tree.

As the animals all headed south down the Staghorn trail to complete the loop and return to the parking lot, the wise old Owl commented that it was the most backwards thing he had ever seen. And so it was that all of Eltrut’s ancestors are called turtles and all of Tibbar’s ancestors are called rabbits.

Enjoy the hike!!
