The Aquinnah Lighthouse
Is the largest on the Vineyard. Gay Head/Aquinnah was on the heavily trafficked trade route to Boston and New York, before the building of the Cape Cod Canal in 1914. Vineyard and Nantucket sounds saw more ships sail through than any other spot. Right in front of the Gay Head Light is a dangerous stretch of rocks called Devil's Bridge, where some large passenger ships went down. The City of Columbia is on the most memorable wrecks. 126 passengers died on a cold night in 1884. The lighthouse keeper, Haratio Pease with a crew of Wampanoag Indians managed to save those who clambered into the rigging. The lighthouse overlooks the clay cliffs and is an absolutely beautiful spot.
To the letterbox:
Walk up pathway to lighthouse. On your right is a cherry tree. A yellow cable covered wire is next to it. A post and rail fence is nailed to the tree/pole. The box sits right behind the pole. Stamp in on the grassy bluff, overlooking the amazing view.
