Paradiddle, named for a drum-sticking rudiment and the inspiration for this letterbox, was sadly found in sooty ruin today. (N.B. It has since been re-planted!) It appears that a forest/brush fire destroyed a section of forest along the Tunxis Trail's Yellow-Dot where Tory Den is located. May this letterbox serve as part of the reforestation effort! Consider wearing dark pants to avoid soot-stains - trust us on this one.
Difficulty: 1 of 5
Terrain: 3.25 of 5
Find your way to Tory Den by going north on the Yellow Dot trail from the Tunxis mainline. Continue north, and gaze upon the scorched aftermath of a forest/brush fire, which appears to have started at the Den. You will pass the former home of Paradiddle, and very soon you will find a large quartz ledge on your RIGHT, and a vernal pool below you on your LEFT. Continuing on your way, you will find still more Jay Drew rock on your RIGHT, followed by a yellow-dot blazed tree, also on your RIGHT. The trail slopes gently downhill, and you will need to cross a large scorched fallen white birch, whose roots are to your LEFT. Shortly after, the trail crosses a small stream (may not be much in a drought), and the trail becomes more rocky than the trail you have been walking. After crossing the stream, look LEFT to a three-sister tree cradling our letterbox between them. If the trail takes a sharp right uphill over a rocky ledge, you just missed it. There is no ink in the box - any dark color will do. Please re-hide better than found, and enjoy the rest of your hike in either direction through this beautiful area!
