Pirate Captain Jack Sparrow had a very vivid dream. He wrote the following words to describe it:

"Ahoy, Mateys! I drank. Out of the deepest bottle I drank. Of rum. And I slept. The deepest sleep I slept. And out of the deepest sleep, I dreamt. Of freshwater seas. Of treasure therein. A place called....Itch-a-gan?..Stitch-a-gan? No, Michigan! I think I want some gin again! Danger! In my drunken wanderings, I have entered a Lion's Den! Help me, dear land lubber, to find my treasure then. On the bluffs of the great Lake Michigan, there is gold therein-pieces of eight in them there hills. Scalawags, here is the path to your stash, see if you can looty the booty, savvy?"

The treasure is in Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve, which is located on Lake Michigan about 4 miles south of Port Washington. It is a beautiful preserve with spectacular views of Lake Michigan and a lovely beach.

Directions from Milwaukee: Take interstate 43 north to the Grafton exit, which is highway 60. At the exit, highway 60 goes west(left) to Grafton, but is called highway Q going east. Turn right (east)on Q, which is also called Ulao Road. Go 1.3 miles east until the road ends at Lake Shore Road. Turn north(left)on Lake Shore Road and travel 1.2 miles until you reach High Bluff Drive. There will be signs telling you that the preserve is coming up. Turn right on High Bluff Drive and travel into the preserve. Park in the main parking lot.Go to main trailhead where the white signs are. To find the treasure:

1.Begin at Lion's Den Trail and walk the plank. The trail will split. Go right on Gentian Walk.
2. Continue on Gentian walk, and enjoy looking out on the deep deep blue. Do you see any ships?
3.You will come to the kiosk of the four winds. Stop and look at the maps, and read the interesting information. Then go right onto Bluff Trail. Continue on the Bluff Trail, ignoring the Woodland Trail.
4.You will pass through a small woods and cross a bridge.Continue on Bluff Trail, do not go onto Wetland Way. Instead, go right, continuing on Bluff Trail, going into a beautiful woods.
5. Go left onto Birch Way, and walk another plank, if you dare!
6. Go left onto Trillium Trek , then you will walk yet another plank and cross a bridge. Then there will be yet another bridge, and you will reach a large gravel path. This is Lion's Den Trail, the main trail in the preserve. Go right on this trail and down a hill a little while. Then you will notice a medium size wood chip path that seems to go straight ahead. Go off the main gravel trail and onto this wood chip path(you may be going slightly left in order to do this). This is part of a trail called the Gorge Loop.
7. Continue on this wood chip trail into the woods. You will walk a little way, and then the trail will wind to the right and down a little hill. There will be a convergence of three signs (marking where the Gorge Loop trail and the Cedar Trail meet). Right before the signs, there will be a very large tree that is split at the base and arches over the trail. Your treasure is buried at the base of this tree. Enjoy!!

When you have taken a treasure and stamped up, you can go back to the main trail. If you go left, a series of steps will take you down to the beach. Or, you can take the main trail right back to the parking lot.

Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve is closed during gun deer hunting.
Please cover this box back up carefully, and if you are able to take the time to let us know the condition of the box, that would be great. Thanks. Sweet Dreams.
