For the first time that afternoon, Margaret relaxed. Tacka guden, the judge was a wise and fair man, even if he was English. He could see how ridiculous the charge against her was. "Yes, yes!" she answered, nodding her head emphatically.

There was a gasp from the onlookers. The old woman couldn't have understood the question. Why hadn't she waited for the interpreter to translate it? Surely she must realize the seriousness of the matter. The other evidence against her could be dismissed as hearsay, but to admit the deed out of her own mouth--how could she hope to avoid being convicted?

Even the judge looked taken aback. He sat silent for several moments, considering Margaret's predicament. Then all at once a slight smile touched his mouth, and he addressed the prisoner.

"And thou dost have a perfect right to do so, mistress," he said. "For as I know, there is no law in this province which doth forbid it! Therefore," turning to the jury, "the jury shall disregard the question, and the prisoner's answer, as having no bearing upon the matter in which she is indicted...."

From the Gradyville Road, turn South into the Park. Circle the Stables and park in the Area designated for Trailers. Follow the Sign of the Rider downhill toward the Creek.
Stay on the Broad Path but mind your Steps, lest you bring Home a Foul Stench. Pass under the Bridge and continue on, crossing some small Streams. At the Fork in the Path you may choose either Way. The sinister Path may be shorter; if you choose this Way, follow until you come to a grassy Trail upon the Right, marked with yellow Poles. Take this Trail up to the Intersection, whereupon you shall see a three-sided Post upon your Right.

If you choose to follow the Way by the Creek, walking widdershins around the Summit, proceed until you reach a grassy Trail upon the Left, and a Gate on the Right where you may not enter. Ascend the grassy Trail until you see the same aforementioned Post.

From the Post, follow a small wooded Trail eastward toward a dark hollow Tree. Upon reaching that Tree you shall see upon your Right Hand, a fine and private Place. You may wish to linger there. Thereafter find the Stump of a warty Tree, thence make your best Way East South East to a mighty forked Beech whose Toes reach out toward its smaller Sibling. Search well beneath the Stone.
