The Old Burying Ground is behind the town hall in Salisbury. There is some parking on Factory St. There were plenty of spaces on a Saturday but it might be busier around here on a week day.

The Old Burying Ground is the earliest in Salisbury Center. The earliest dated stone is for Dr. Wade Clark who died August 6, 1750. The latest is for Churchill Coffing who died May 14, 1873. Many of the stones here have small plaques on the back giving the name and dates for the person named on the front. This is the first time I’ve seen this. It’s nice that someone did this before the front engravings disappear.

We weren’t able to find Dr. Clarks but Mr. Coffing’s is hard to miss. It’s the biggest one here. You’ll need to find it. Once you do, look for the large stump intruding on the fence. Look inside under the plug.

Be sure to cover well when you’re done. This is a pretty open place and there are houses nearby too so you’ll need to be discreet.
