HUNTING IS ALLOWED HERE. WEAR ORANGE.

Everyone knows where Hurd State Park is. What about George D. Seymour State Park? After passing the entrance to Hurd, drive 0.7 mile and turn right onto Clarkhurst Road. Drive to the end (you’ll know you’re there by the Road Closed sign) and park in the dirt turnout. Do not block private driveways. Allow about an hour round trip.

The two things that struck me about this park were the big rock ledges and the big old trees.
We ventured off trail and found an old foundation with steps up to it and we also went into the meadow at the end of the trail to find a raised platform with signboards but the walk through the high grasses wasn’t fun. We saw a great blue heron, turtles and the bullfrogs were croaking up a storm. BRING BUG SPRAY!! There’s a reason those frogs were so happy.

Walk past the cement barriers, over a bridge (pray it doesn’t collapse) and take a left (right is private). Walk along the paved road, at first going mostly downhill and then up and down until you get to a Y intersection. Go right (left is an open field) and uphill on a now unpaved road. At the next Y go right (straight?) again and walk a ways on a straight flat stretch of road until you come to a giant down on the right. Just past this, look on the left for a majestic maple (?) with many branches (if you get to the meadow, you went too far). Look in back of the tree under bark.

Hike length: 1-2 miles
