Elephant Head Letterbox

Location: State: NH County: Carroll Town: Bartlett

Planted by: Tweety and Mr. Coon 5/19/03

Difficulty: Easy ten minute walk to the box along the way of an easy but interesting trail around a small lake.

Driving directions: Route 302 to Crawford Notch Depot.

Background:
This box is planted along the route of a short flat easy trail around Saco Lake that is the headwaters of the Saco River. From here the water heads to the coast of Maine, but just a short way farther along Rt 302 water flows westward to join the Connecticut River drainage but the here the water heads to the coast of Maine. This is a great hike for kids since, as Robert Buchsbaum says in his book on family friendly hikes (Nature Hikes in the White Mountains , AMC Books), they can see where they are going all the while they are walking along.
Just to the south side of the lake at the edge of the road is a rock formation that really looks like an elephant peeking out of the hillside if viewed from the north. Just behind the Crawford Notch Depot AMC Visitor Center across the street is the start of the trail up Mt. Willard where lurks the Tigers at Twilight letterbox.

Directions to the box:
From the road (Rt 302 ) cross a wooden bridge across the very newly emergent Saco River and start along the Saco Lake trail. Just before crossing the third log bridge (don’t count the real bridge by the weir) stop on the flat rock and turn around to look at 150 degrees for a big rock (nine feet tall) broken off the rock wall behind it. The box is tucked in the crevice behind the boulder.
