All SIX of these boxes are easy and kid friendly. The clues will take you through a fun packed vacation day at the CT shore. Four of the boxes are located in Old Lyme and 2 are in Niantic... all are off Rte 156. (This was our first series planted.)

The 1st Wonder of Summer Clue:
(Hallmark's Ice Cream Stand)
****7-13-09 A-OK****
Exit 70 off I-95. East on Rte 156. Hall Mark's will be on your right. Park anywhere in the lot. Walk to the rear of the building. You will see a white shed protruding off the main building. In the far right corner, next to a maple tree, peek under the shed. Do you see the little pile of rocks? You have found Wonder #1. Try the homemade ice cream. Black Raspberry is my favorite.... and there is nothing a kid likes more than ice cream for breakfast!

The 2nd Wonder of Summer Clue:
(Sound View Village)
****7-15-09 New Home at VECCHITO's!****
****SEASONAL BOX! Memorial Day to Labor Day. Weekends until school is out and then daily over the summer (11am-9:30pm)****
From Hall Mark's, continue to go East on Rte 156. Turn RIGHT onto Hartford Ave. You will see the sign for "Sound View Village." The Community Center is on the right. They sell fresh baked donuts (seasonally) on weekends and holidays. The original Donut Shoppe is right next door, but no longer operational. The donuts are now baked in their main location in Clinton and sent over to the community center. "Sound View Donuts" is tradition spanning over many generations. If you haven't had a Sound View Donut, you should try one. Continue down toward the beach. Do you see Vecchitto's Italian Ice on your LEFT? This is the bast Italian ice ever. You might want to park your car and go buy an Italian Ice and ask for teh 2nd Wonder of Summer! Also, check out the Vecchitto's location off Rte 9 in Middletown.

The 3rd Wonder of Summer Clue:
(Beach/Ocean/Rocks)
****7-13-09 A-OK!****
****Parking is very tight in the summer months. Off-street is 2-hr and the lots can be $15. Also, your walk down the beach will take you from the public Soundview beach onto private beaches. However, all beaches, up to the high tide mark are for public access and you should not have a problem walking to the rocks.*****)
You will have to ditch your car now. Walk onto the beach at Sound View. Walk right along the water's edge, heading East(Left). I have found several arrowheads along this stretch. Look closely, some are made of brown-stone (indigenous to the area) and others are white quartz (the local Indians traded with Indians from upstate new York for the quartz) Continue along the shore until the sand ends. You have reached the rocks protruding into the water. Walk out onto these large rocks. If the rocks are green or wet, they might be a bit slippery. Look down and watch your step. While you are looking down, look for a brass benchmark. This is a plate about 3(ish) inches in diameter and is embedded in the rock. This is used for surveying purposes. While you are here, do your own survey of the land-- look to the furthest point to the East... is that a great house or what? Look to your West... 3 houses in from the furthest point... that is our little getaway! Now turn around and head back to the beach, following the grassline. Find the "Private Property No Trespassing Sign" Looking into the rocks, about waist high, you will see a small man-made hole drilled into a rock. Directly below this 2" hole is a crack in between 2 large rocks. There are some small rocks tucked into the crack... move those aside to find the 3rd Wonder of Summer. Please put them back carefully and do not shove the box in too far or it might disappear!

The 4th Wonder of Summer Clue:
(Unk's on the Bay)
****10-11-08 A-OK****
Go back to your car and hop back onto Rte 156 heading East. Continue all the way to Niantic. Go over the Niantic Draw-Bridge. At your first light, go left. Stop sign, go left. Next stop sign go right. You will see Unk's on the Bay restaurant on your right. This is where my Aunt Sandy taught me how to eat a steamed lobster. Several decades later, I still return to Unk's for lobster! Yummy! You can stop for lunch on the deck and take in the bay breeze.. or you can reach under the air conditioning unit on the side of the building next to the parking lot. You have found the 4th Wonder of Summer!

The 5th Wonder of Summer Clue:
(The Book Barn Downtown)
****7-15-09 A-OK****
Leaving Unk's, go back to Rte 156, heading West, back over the bridge. On the West side of the bridge is the entrance to the boardwalk. This is not part of our clues this time, but it's worth checking out! Continue through the center of town and you will see the Book Barn Downtown-- on the right, next to Dunkin Donuts. When inside the Book Barn, go to far REAR LEFT little room. Look "up" for the 5th Wonder of Summer!

The 6th Wonder of Summer Clue:
(Hawk's Nest Beach)
****7-16-09 A-OK****
Continue heading West on Rte 156. Go past Sound View and you will see Center Beach Ave on your left. (This is one street after the official Hawk's Nest sign) Head all the way to the end of Center Beach Ave and turn right onto West End Dr. You will see Garvin's general Store on the right. (Summer hours 8am-8pm) Park in front and go inside. Say hi to Jessica, Claire, (Mik)Kim & Anna! Check out all the fun shore-y things in the store and then go onto the front porch and look on top of the soda machine. You have found the 6th and final Wonder of Summer!
Ask for GRUB or Jess... they can give you info on Summer and off-season rentals! Our family has vacationed here for three generations. It is a safe, family oriented environment. There are over 50 rental cottages in the association with scheduled daily activities for the children, including scavenger hunts, arts & crafts, crabbing contests, movies on the beach and a 4th of July Parade!!

Thanks for finding the 6 Wonders of Summer. I hope you and your kids enjoyed a fun-filled day!
