Pemi Trail Letterbox

Location: State: New Hampshire County: Grafton Town: Franconia

Planted by: Tweety and Mr. Coon 5/22/03

Difficulty: Easy ten minute walk to the box from the parking lot if the furry engineers haven’t obscured the trail too much. Good for kids we think.

Driving directions: Route 93 to the parking area for the Lafayette Place Campground just North of the Basin and the Flume.

Background:
The Pemi trail parallels Rt. 93 just to the west of it, passing through the Lafayette Place Campground and heads to the Old Man of the Mt. parking lot. We hiked this section last year for the first time and thought it would be a good one for kids. The path keeps company with a stream along its way crossing on bridges in several places and there is a lot of evidence of beaver activity just above the campground.
The mountains lost their Old Man this past spring and so did I. This box is dedicated to both of them.

Directions to the box:
From the parking lot near the entrance to the campground start up the Franconia Notch State Park Multi-use Trail, cross a bridge and look for the Pemi Trail on your right. Find you way along the trail around any obstructions until you see a fascinating twelve foot tall boulder on the west edge of the trail. The rock has several trees growing out of its sides and top. Twenty paces (...steps, footfalls, placement of a foot...) later the trail has a spur to the left, but hold to the main path, the right hand fork to a four foot boulder on your left and ten paces later where the path is dammed by the root of a tree on the left (west) look among the roots on the SW side of the tree.
