Your journey today is in conservation land surrounding a popular fishing spot in Westborough, Massachusetts. The Bowman Street Conservation Area includes 144 acres of land surrounding Sandra Pond (the town reservoir). There are many miles of trails in this conservation area. For the hungry, there are picnic tables (but please carry your trash out). For more information on open space in Westborough, also see:

Directions to the Bowman Street Conservation Area:

Route 495 to Route 9 West (Exit 23B). Turn left at the 1st set of lights onto Lyman Street. At the end of Lyman, turn right onto East Main Street (also called Route 30). At the rotary, go East on Route 135 (this is about as close to a left turn as you can make in a rotary), (aka South Street). Bear right at the fork in the road. This is now called Upton Road. Take Upton Road over the Massachusetts Turnpike, then take the first right turn on Bowman Street. Continue until you pass under the Turnpike, then look for the Conservation Area parking lot on the right.

Facing the ‘Bowman Street Conservation Area’ carved map, take the trail to the left. Continuing, see a place to picnic. Stop if you wish, or continue straight. A right turn brings you to a neat campfire and gathering place. Check it out if you like, or continue straight. If you stop at the campsite, return here. Follow the trail through a unique area with Pine Trees. Don’t take the 1st path off to the right. You’ll take the 2nd right hand trail – but be careful as it’s not as well traveled. If you reach the water, you’ve gone too far. Look for the blue markings on the trees. This path stays VERY close to the water. You’ll walk this trail that’s carved right into the side of the hill. Cross the bridge and stop on the island if you like, but continue down this path – along the hill – down, then up, continuing along the water.

Follow this path along the reservoir. Gaze out to view Sandra Pond. You may see several fishermen on a good day. Continue on the path dug into the side of this large hill. Around the corner, a small bench awaits you where you can sit and relax, or continue without the rest. Soon, another bench awaits you. Bear RIGHT up the hill and see the bridge down below, but don’t go there. Continue. At the opening to a somewhat familiar grassy area, and picnic facilities in the distance, stay on the trail to the LEFT and soon keeping the stream to your right as you continue walking. This trail brings you across a small bridge. You’ll see a stone wall to your right, but don’t stop yet… continue until you nearly walk into the wall, and look by the wall facing the stream. After stamping in, continue home by continuing down this trail, and crossing another small bridge. Your car should be within sight.
