Although land-bound, this rock is named for a structure on a ship that is used as a lookout point. Or perhaps it refers to the birds-eye view you will have of the Sierra mountains when you reach the summit. Placed on Thanksgiving day 2007, the bird is definitely not a turkey.
The letterbox is in a vertical crag facing the meadow. You can start the hike from old Hwy 40, across the meadow, and then up up up. I would suggest you start from a tertiary road and traverse.
Good luck!
BTW, Lola's Lookout is in the area. Following the crest of the mountains to Lola's is a fabulous hike and well worth the visit.
Note: this area is owned by Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort (aka Foster Symes Developers). They are planning on tearing up this area and building 900+ timeshare condos, lodges, and other recreational facilities. Enjoy this area while you can. It will soon be lost forever.
