My Neighbor Totoro Letterbox series (4 boxes planted on 6/30/08 - 2 still there) on the Milton Interurban Trail. About 1 ¾ miles round trip. The trailhead is off of Kent St, which is off of Porter Way in Milton 98354. Park down by the baseball fields and walk up the hill.

Letterbox #1 (Sorry, first box has gone missing. Follow directions to second box.)
Start at the trail head on Kent St. Go north (northeast?) on the trail (slightly uphill). Look up on your left for a nocturnal shelter. Who lives there? If you see a backyard with a big toy on the right then you are going the right way. After a big rain you can float walnut boats in the run-off stream on your right.
Cross the first mile marker. (You haven’t really gone a mile yet because they started counting back on the other trail across the street.) Go for a while and around the bend. Have a picnic or rest at the table if you like before you continue on.
See the fence on your left? Go to the LEFT of the fence on the gravel path. This turns into a path that goes down to the Hylebos creek. Pass up the trail to your left (unless you want to visit the sandy pit)and on your right (unless you want to go back up to the fence). Stop at the fork in the path and look straight ahead. Do you see a small stand of young cedar trees? Look behind the nearest tree under the bark and moss to find letterbox number one. PLEASE re-hide Mei well with bark and sticks before you leave her. Visit the creek if you like. It’s nice and shady.

Letterbox #2
(This box has gone missing too. Please continue on to box 3) Go back up to the main paved trail and continue on. Turn right onto the next side trail and go uphill. It’s a bit steep so be careful. Pass the big stump on your right. Jump over the log. Up up up to the almost top! Find a huge double trunked big leaf maple tree covered with moss. This is the fairy tree, very special. Find a large door on the uphill side and peek under the moss and bark. You have found your first little totoro! Hide him again well with moss and things, so passersby won’t find him.

Letterbox #3
Go back to the main trail walking carefully so as not to slip. Keep going, it’s not too far to number 3. Stand on the second silver rectangle you encounter on the main trail. Look to your right. Do you see two maple trees growing close side by side? Look on the uphill side behind these. You have found the BIG Totoro! Please re-hide him well with sticks and moss.

Letterbox #4
Take the trail onward. Go to the end of the fence, past the ½ mile marker and to the bench. Do you need a rest? When you are ready, leave the main trail and go down the path behind the bench. Turn at the giant nurse log and keep heading down hill toward the creek. Just a few paces, then leave the trail (slightly) to find a tall snag (tall dead tree stump) on your right. Look under the bark on the uphill side to find the Cat Bus. Enjoy some creek-side fun before heading home.
