Braemore Butterfly: Little Wood Satyr

About 1 mile round trip--mostly level, one steep section.

Leilani’s Aunt and I started butterflying together a few years ago. Last year, after I learned about letterboxing at a Girl Scout event, I asked her if she’d be willing to try it with me, in conjunction with one of our butterfly hikes. Well, now we’re hooked!

Our first “lepidoptera and letterboxing” trip was in Guilford, and one of our early trips was to the Braemore Preserve. We saw a number of butterflies there, of which I’m sure Leilani’s Aunt still has a list, and one of these was the Little Wood Satyr. We went there to find one series, and I immediately planned that when we returned for the other series, I would plant a box dedicated to this butterfly.

Well, it took a year, but it’s finally planted! For anyone who’s keeping track, you’ll have noticed that pretty much all of my boxes up to this point have been drive-bys. I decided it was time to put a box out in the woods! Kudos to all who do this on a regular basis and are able to write clues that even I can figure out!!

So here goes:

Find your way to the Braemore Preserve in the northern part of Guilford on Route 77.

Observe what a lovely job the Boy Scouts have done on the parking lot! The entrance had just been paved when we arrived there today.

From the parking lot, make your way into the woods on the trail marked with the blue rectangle and red dot. This is the only trail you need to be on to find this box.

You will cross the red trail and the Bridle Loop (a triangle with a circle--you may actually cross this one twice) and eventually come to the remains of a wall that crosses the trail. In front of the wall, turn right and take 20-25 steps to a tree with the remains of a vine climbing its trunk. Immediately behind this tree are two medium rocks, with a third rock behind the rock that is closer to the wall. The butterfly is hiding under this rock, behind a trap door. (Do not go as far as the BIG rock!)

During late spring and early summer, if you continue on this trail to the grassy knoll, you may catch a glimpse of the actual Little Wood Satyr in flight. The most direct route back to the parking lot is to return the way you came.

We hope you enjoy the hunt!
