In the village of Mendocino there is a famous and odd carving entitled Time and the Maiden. It was carved from a singe piece of redwood for the Mendocino Masonic Temple and installed in 1866. Apparently this statue contains any number of secret and forbidden symbols particular to the Masons which were not intended for public perusal. These symbols are so secret we don't even know which ones they are! The statue has been moved from its original place in the village, but can still be easily seen at perhaps the highest point in Mendocino.

To find The Forbidden Statue Letterbox in its new location find the Hillcrest Cemetery in the vicinity of Little Lake and Lansing Streets. Head to the top of the crest from where you can spy the statue. Look for a white picket fence wherein lie the remains of William H. Webster and William Kelley. Find the large tree on the east side of the fencing. On the southern side of the tree trunk under some duff should rest the Forbidden Statue Letterbox.

Be discreet and rehide with care as Mendocino is a busy little village.

Thanks for coming!
