Go north on Bishops Lodge Rd. until you get to the light at Artist Rd. Turn right onto Artist Rd. From the light, drive towards the Santa Fe Ski Basin for just under 12 miles to the Big Tesuque Campground (on your right), then another half mile to Forest Road 102, an easy-to-miss dirt road heading downhill on your left. Head down this dirt road for about 3 miles until you reach an intersection with Forest Road 412. Park here.
Stand in the middle of the intersection. You are headed for a large stump at about 280 degrees and 35 paces from the center of the intersection. Stump is near a small drainage. Look under a rock and bark at base of stump.
From here, you can return the way you came, or continue down Forest Road 102. This route will emerge in the foothills near Rio En Medio and you will get a wonderful view, looking out towards the Santa Fe Opera. Six miles from the letterbox, you will reach pavement (Hwy. 592, above Rancho Encantado). Go straight at this intersection, and another 3 miles will take you to Tesuque Village Road, where you can turn left if you want to head back to Santa Fe through Tesuque.
Please note that Forest Road 102 is gated and closed from approximately November 15 to April 15 due to snow. And, although this road has always been suitable for any type of passenger vehicle, its condition has deteriorated in the past year. We were able to do it in our Honda Civic but it was a little rough in a few spots.
