Where were you when the mountain blew? (WWYWTMB?) Letterbox

Goat Marsh Research Natural Area, Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument, Cowlitz County, Washington.

NW Forest Pass Required for parking at Goat Marsh trailhead.

Directions: from Interstate 5 @ Woodland, Washington go east on Hwy 503 towards Cougar. Hwy 503 turns right (south) at Jack’s Country Store & Restaurant--keep driving east (straight) on Lewis River Road (toward Cougar). About one mile before (west of) Cougar, there’s a junction for Road 81 and Kalama Lake—take this left (north) turn, following the winding road up hill for several miles. Enroute you will pass entrance signs for Gifford Pinchot National Forest and Mount Saint Helens NVM. Pavement ends at mile post 11, continue to junction of Forest Roads 81 & 8123: proceed straight onto road 8123. About ½ mile ahead on the left is the Goat Marsh Trailhead, a discrete parking area that only fits a couple vehicles. Park here to begin walk.

Walk west on trail towards Goat Marsh—follow signs. This is an easy 1-mile walk to the WWYWTMB? letterbox. Pass through the cedar rail fence. About ½ mile farther, when you first get clear sight of open water, there is a large, huggable Douglas-fir tree to your left, and to your right is a user-made trail leading into the brush—follow this trail out to a point of land jutting into the marsh. On your left will be the open water, on your right, emergent vegetation and a view of the local volcano. On the right (mountain) side of the point, a log stretching out into the marsh from shore. Reach under that log where it rests upon the bank to find the WWYWTMB? Letterbox. Enjoy the scenery, a lunch, and avian acrobats.
