Lost Children of the Alleghenies

In April of 1856 seven year old Joseph Cox and five year old George Cox wandered away from their parents home in Spruce Hollow, Pennsylvania and perished due to exposure. A few nights later Jacob Dybert, a farmer living on the other side of Blue Knob Mountain, had the the first of three identical dreams. For three nights in a row he dreamt that he was walking through an unfamiliar section of forest and found the bodies of the boys at the foot of a tree. Compelled by his dream Jacob and his brother in law retraced the steps that Jacob had taken in his dream. On May 8, 2 weeks later, Remarkably they found the boy’s bodies where they lay huddled beneath a tree.

In 1901 local residents erected a memorial in the forest where the children were found. Some people say they can sometimes hear the sound of children playing in the woods near the Cox Monument in Pavia.

From the Junctions where 96 and 869 meet, follow 869 West past the small town of Pavia.
(about 3 miles or so) Continue on 869 till you see Griffith School Ball Field on your left, just past the ball field on your right you will see the road that leads to the Lost Children of the Alleghenies Monument. Follow this road 2.7 miles (Watch for oncoming traffic this road is narrow.) till you see the sign that say “monument” Park here. Follow the trail up to the Monument. Stand looking at the sign that tell about the event that happened here. To the right you will see a small walking path. From the start of the path take approx. 38 steps till you come to a tree with a red mark. With you back to the tree take a reading of 240*, You will see a stump to its left you will see a fallen tree, This is where you will find what your looking for. Behind a rock and some sticks. This is a area that hunting takes Place so use caution where orange during hunting season and watch for wildlife. Bears have been spotted in this area.

Brown ink is best for this Letterbox.
