Clues

You will find “In the Pines” in a lovely forest filled with tall Red Pine and Oak trees. To find “In the Pines” letterbox drive west on Highway 77/27 for about 1.2 miles from the traffic light on Highway 63. Turn right at the second entrance for the Hayward Medical Campus. Take another right and a quick left turn into the first parking lot. Look for the Hasta Trailhead sign and start here. On the trail, head for the split and take the left side of the Hilly Loop Trial and enjoy the hike. (The entire trail is about .7 miles). When the Hilly Trail intersects with the main trail, turn right and then another right back on to the Hilly Loop. Hike up a small hill, down again and up to the very top of a bigger hill. At the very top is a large leaning oak tree on your left. Just ahead of you on the the trail, you’ll see a tall pine tree on the left and right side . Walk 19 paces from the leaning oak and stop. Face the tall pine tree on the left which has an old log laying to the right of the pine. Walk around the left side of the pine and look for the crotch between the pine tree trunk and the log. Take the letter box to the trail to “stamp up.” When you return the box cover it with pine needles and leaves. Continue your hike on the Hilly Loop back to where you started. On your way listen to all the songbirds in the spring and summer months. You see why it’s called the Hilly Loop.
